Are Habitat homes given away? No. Our homes are built-in partnership with  families who contribute 300 “sweat equity” hours (per adult) to their homes.  Families pay a down payment and then a zero interest mortgage with payments based on no more than 30% of their income.  Visit our Own a Home section to learn more about the qualifications of Habitat homeownership.

What kind of homes do you build? Currently, we are renovating previously foreclosed and abandoned homes in targeted neighborhoods hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis.  Because we’re purchasing properties rather than building from scratch on a vacant lot, each and every house is unique—though always with the same basic tenets: simple, decent, and affordable.  Visit our Neighborhood Revitalization section to learn more about our work in renovating homes.

What is the difference between the local Habitat and Habitat International? Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley (HHHV) services Washtenaw County and is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI).  HFHI provides operation guidelines; however, each affiliate is independent and governed by their own Boards of Directors.  HHHV is an independent 501(c)(3) organization that raises all money locally here in Washtenaw County.  Visit our Local Habitat and Habitat International section to learn more.

Where does Habitat get its funding? Habitat has worked very hard and is very proud of the fact that our affiliate has a diversified funding pool made of up a wide variety of support from individuals, local businesses, faith-based organizations, civic groups, private family foundations, public foundations, and public funding.  Our ReStore also provides much-needed unrestricted funding to support our operations.
