Meet the Hogans Family

“We are the Hogans: Jason and Cat, our sons Avery, 17, and Mitchell, 10, along with our cat, Biscuit. We are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to become homeowners with the support of Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley!

This opportunity has been a lifesaver. Being an interracial couple, raised in Flint and Detroit, we wanted to find a way to settle in a safe and diverse environment, close to our extended family. We have struggled to maintain financial independence, while raising two boys and dealing with the never ending increases in rent in Washtenaw County. In ten years, we moved four different times to stay within our financial means between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

We discussed the idea of buying a home to provide stability for the remainder of our sons’ childhoods but didn’t realize how difficult it would be to obtain a loan. Habitat for Humanity is giving us the ability to build our family’s wealth and have a place to grow old together.

The Home Ownership Program is building our confidence and empowering us to take on the responsibilities of being homeowners. The joy in our boys when they talk about the potential of having their own bedrooms is priceless.

It’s amazing how the community comes together to support this program. We see all of the hard work involved and it truly takes a village. We are excited to settle into our future home and continue to give back to the community that makes this a reality!”
